Make the pie higher

One of the best things about English is the fact that, if you know what you’re doing, you can mess about with it. In fact, even if you don’t know what you’re doing you can often get away with it. If everybody stuck to the rules we wouldn’t have the twisted brain-wrong of a one-off man-mental.
Then again, we probably also wouldn’t have Villa Tahiti, the new themed room in Brighton’s Oceana club, at the base of the town’s illustrious West Street.
It’s not open yet, but if anything it’s even less alluring than the picture makes it look. If misappropriation was a crime, somebody in the head office would be looking at a very long stretch.
All I ever intend to see of the inside is the painting by the door that looks like something Gaugin might have tossed off after one too many drinks there.
