hackbash – attribute
Dec 5th, 2007 by handolio
We weren’t quite sure how to take mrsnakeface’s comment on my terms and conditions post (precious content?), but it made me ask myself a couple of questions:
1) Is this an angry website?
That’s not the intention. Perhaps Charlie and I just have a lot of pent-up rage? “Hackbash” was coined with a gathering of journalists in mind. Though it could of course be taken the other way, we’re journalists and I hope that we don’t come across as simply slagging off other journalists’ work – we’re praising it too.
We’re also trying (as best we can) to ask honest questions about our own work and experiences, and to discuss journalism and online journalism in general.
2) Should we have terms and conditions?
I’m obviously not a fan of stupid ones, but it’s good practice to be clear on what people can do with your content. To that effect, we’ve decided to publish Hackbash under a Creative Commons license.
The one we’ve chosen means that, should anyone want to, they can re-use or adapt our content provided they credit us and publish the results under the same license terms.
You’ll note that it’s non-commercial. If you’re making money out of us, we want a cut.

Er – I thought the “angry website” comment referred to theautochannel.com, not your blog?
*Sound of a slow-dawning realisation*
Ah – now it makes sense
Ah well, a bit of pointless soul-searching never hurt anyone.
