Is you is or is you ain’t?

Must be a slow week in online journalism, as I feel myself moved to observe the passing of Facebook’s compulsory “is” in the status field.
Thrilled and baffled in equal measure, I and others emerged blinking this morning into a limitless grammatical utopia – names have been disguised to protect the idle.
It’s an odd thing that it was ever there, really, and odder still that anyone should care enough to start not one, but two Facebook groups calling for its abolition – and that’s just the ones with more than 100,000 members.
Clearly, enough people cared that Facebook finally did it in.
Silently, in the night.
The BBC magazine hasn’t updated its R.I.P section for a while, but if ITV Play can get in there I daresay that Facebook’s “is” is of suitable import.
