These are not just cars…

Marks & Spencer has a lot to answer for.
I don’t mean because it contributes 400 million carrier bags to the 13 billion apparently handed out by British retailers each year, or even because of the “widespread discrimination” that Unite alleges at the store’s meat suppliers.
But because of that fucking “These are not just…” thing.
First, a fact: whatever the product in question is, it is just that. Sorry, aspirational middle classes.
Second, every idiot’s doing it now, with increasingly ludicrous claims.
This is not just a crosshead…
I mention this because the other day the Reuters website was running an animated Citroen advert with some funky, pseudo-mad-inventoresque art theme, which carried the text “These are not cars – they’re a combination of courage and imagination that would have made Jules Verne blush.”
Oh really?
It’s a hard one to call, but I fear the assertion may be almost as self-aggrandising as today’s claim by the Mail that M&S was hopping on board its little bag-banishing bandwagon. Which started yesterday, fully eight months after M&S began trialling its 5p charge.
This was not just bullshit…
