Anyone know how to edit Wordpress themes?

You can do it from within Wordpress - click Design then Theme Editor. Click “404 template” from the list on the right, edit the crap out of the box on the left (the Firefox “find in page” tool can be handy if there’s lots of code there), then click Update File.

@Tom: Thank you - I have to log in as admin for admin privileges, so I forgot you could do that. Had to edit notfound.php but you’re quite right. Our holier-than-thou-ness is restored
