When we were one

I’ve just noticed that Hackbash is one and a bit, having had its birthday on 3 August. The year’s gone quickly – far too quickly, and a lot’s changed for me in that time.
I wasn’t sure why we started Hackbash, except that it might be a useful dumping ground for the discussions Charlie and I [...]

Lies, damn lies, and Google Analytics

There are probably two maths teachers out there somewhere, and perhaps an A-Level examiner, who can attest to a past lack of interest in statistics on my part. But only 95.7% of statistics are bad.
The good ones, I am reminded, live in Google Analytics and tell you fascinating things about how few people find your [...]

OK, more customer service-related whinging. I have a BT landline so I can get broadband, which doesn’t come from BT.
The line’s intermittently noisy. Sometimes it’s unusable. When it’s bad, the broadband’s slow, when it’s not bad the broadband flies.
When it’s bad, it’s almost cured by disconnecting the broadband modem. Almost, but not quite.
I know the [...]

Maybe I’m slow on this – but has anyone else noticed this ‘highlighted quote’ feature before at the top of Google News results? (please excuse the poor reproduction – you get the idea).

I like the way it tells you how many news sources have included the same quote – kind of shows up the [...]

Every now and then on the internet you come across some boring old bastard with an axe to grind about some company that’s pissed them off lately. This is that bastard, Orange is that company, here’s my axe:
My mobile’s fucked*. I bought it from Orange, a customer of whose I’ve been since 1996 – 12 [...]

I’ve been plagued of late by the creeping realisation that we’re a department of between four and six journalists, depending how you count it, in a company where 114-116 people aren’t journalists. Lately, we’ve been so busy trying to shore up our position that I wonder if we’ve taken our eyes off our craft just [...]

It’s embedded YouTube videos and embraced social bookmarking, but in one particular area BBC News Online has always remained a little old fashioned: related links have remained fenced in the right-hand navigation pane.

Earlier, DanG spotted that the Beeb is trialling bringing links in from the cold; placing them in the body copy where they belong.
And, [...]

Aw nuts, I killed our pictures

Oops. A week or so ago I finally remembered to delete the original Hackbash, hosted on Wordpress.com
Are you sure you want to permanently delete this blog? it asked.
Yes, I duly confirmed.
I’ve just discovered that exporting the blog to our self-hosted Wordpress install at the beginning of January didn’t bring 2007’s image uploads along, too. All [...]

WTF is wrong with Word 2007?

Word processor: job number one = display text clearly on screen.
Word 2007: fail.

Is that two spaces to the left of the dash, one to the right? One space left, no spaces right?
In fact, it’s a space on each side:

But of course.
Is it me? Is it Calibri? Has anyone found a way to fix it so [...]

Fun with Facebook advertising

Facebook has slipped in a new feature next to its adverts, in the form of little thumbs up and thumbs down icons.
I doubt that giving something the thumbs down results in the responsible party being finished off in front of a baying crowd; I can but hope.
Meanwhile I can vent my Facebook advertising rage by [...]
