WTF is wrong with Word 2007?

Word processor: job number one = display text clearly on screen.
Word 2007: fail.
![]()
Is that two spaces to the left of the dash, one to the right? One space left, no spaces right?
In fact, it’s a space on each side:
![]()
But of course.
Is it me? Is it Calibri? Has anyone found a way to fix it so that it’s actually possible to proof with Word 2007?

The problem, I find, is that whenever I criticise Word, people assume I’m either on an anti-Microsoft crusade, or on an anti-bloatware crusade. Neither are necessarily true; it’s simply that every time I am forced to open it, at least one thing irritates me about it. Yes, stuff irritates me about Nisus Writer too, but the hit rate is much lower, and is in any case at least in part simply because the developers are trying to suit all usage scenarios in a single application.
Word – and I make this observation based solely on my years of experience – is a pile of cock. It does some things very, very well, and I’d always have in on my PC or Mac for the security of knowing I’m as compliant as possible, but as a writing tool it’s just mucky.
Oh, and I thought turning on anti-aliasing would solve the problem, but I’ve just tried it and it doesn’t. Amusingly, the wider space appears to the right of the en-dash rather than the left. It’s not even consistently inconsistent!
