Fanboy moment: Shearwater
May 12th, 2009 by cpev
I’ve become increasingly obsessed with Shearwater since I first saw them play at the Sanctuary Cella in Hove, on the same night as one of Fatboy Slim’s big beach jobs.
There were thousands on the beach for Norman, and just 16 of us in that damp basement, where Jonathan Meiburg and Kim Burke played as a two-piece. But I think everyone left the Sanctuary that night thinking they’d witnessed something truly special.
The last two albums, Palo Santo and Rook, are both wonderful, and get frequent bouts of intensive play in my house. But live, Shearwater are something else. You get a taste of that on the many fan videos on YouTube, and this version of Leviathan, Bound is one of the most spine-tingling.

Yay! Charlie posted!
Don’t forget we saw them at the Komedia last November, birthday boy.
They were great in a way that a shit mobile phone photo almost entirely fails to capture.
I think that photo is rather atmospheric.
And whoever the people you can see in the distance are, I’m sure they were very good at what they were doing. Musicians of some kind, perhaps?
